Why NUJ Security Summit Matters For National Development

As Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges ranging from terrorism and banditry to cybercrime, communal conflicts and misinformation, one reality has become clear, neither security agencies nor the media can effectively fulfill their responsibilities in isolation.
This is why among others, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) will convene a National Security Summit in Abuja on June 18 and 19, 2026, under the theme, “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building.” The gathering presents an opportunity to address one of the most critical and often misunderstood relationships in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
For decades, interactions between journalists and security institutions have frequently been characterized by suspicion, tension and occasional confrontation. Journalists have accused security agencies of restricting access to information, intimidating media practitioners and undermining press freedom. On the other hand, security agencies have often expressed concerns that some media reports compromise operations, expose sensitive information or unintentionally amplify threats to national security.
These mutual concerns have created mistrust that have sometimes hampered effective communication, particularly during periods of national crisis. From insurgency operations in the North East to responses to civil unrest and communal conflicts, disagreements over information management have often affected the common objective both institutions share, safeguarding the nation and protecting citizens.
Experience has shown that sustainable security cannot be achieved without public trust, and public trust cannot thrive without credible information. This is where the media becomes indispensable.
The media serves as a bridge between government institutions and the public, informing citizens, exposing emerging threats, promoting accountability and countering misinformation. Security agencies, meanwhile, are entrusted with protecting lives, defending national sovereignty and maintaining law and order. Their mandates may differ, but their ultimate goal is the same, peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria.
In today’s digital era, where false narratives can spread faster than facts, collaboration between journalists and security institutions has become more important than ever. Effective partnerships can help combat disinformation, enhance public awareness, support conflict prevention efforts and strengthen national resilience against security threats.
The forthcoming NUJ National Security Summit therefore represents more than a routine gathering. It offers a platform for honest conversations, mutual understanding and the rebuilding of confidence between two institutions whose cooperation is vital to national development.
By bringing together media professionals, security experts, policymakers and other stakeholders, the summit is expected to generate practical strategies for improving information sharing, protecting press freedom, enhancing professional ethics and promoting responsible reporting on security matters.
Nation building requires strong institutions working toward common goals. The media and security agencies may approach national challenges from different perspectives, but they remain indispensable partners in preserving democracy, promoting peace and safeguarding Nigeria’s future. The NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, was optimistic that
“As participants gather in Abuja, the expectation is that the summit will not merely discuss existing challenges but will chart a new path toward constructive engagement, founded on mutual respect, professionalism and a shared commitment to the national interest.”
“In a period when Nigeria faces evolving security realities, strengthening the partnership between the media and security agencies is no longer optional, it is a strategic necessity for national development.” Comrade Yahya declared. The Chairperson organizing committee, also NUJ Deputy National President, Dr Abimbola Oyetunde said ” At the end of the summit, participants are expected to adopt an actionable communiqué and develop a framework to guide future collaboration between the media and security institutions” with the arrangements so far, the summit will be successful, God’s willing. After all, “Security agencies and the media are strongest when they work as partners in safeguarding the public interest.” A stitch in time saves nine.
