The Upper Sharia Court Shahuci has sentenced a young man, Hassan Abba, for assault after he was found guilty of attacking another youth during activities linked to unlawful horse riding in Duruminya area of Kano.
The court, presided over by Abdu Abdullahi Wayyah, delivered the judgment on March 16, 2026.
According to court proceedings, the defendant, a resident of Duruminya–Lokon Maraba, assaulted Ibrahim Haruna during a dispute that arose among youths engaged in horse riding activities around the residence of the Emir of Kano.
Authorities had earlier banned such horse riding gatherings in the area due to public safety concerns, but some youths have continued to defy the directive.
During the incident, Ibrahim Haruna sustained serious injuries, including a broken arm.
In its ruling, the court imposed the following penalties on the offender:
Three months imprisonment in a correctional facility or an option of a ₦30,000 fine.
A non-custodial sentence requiring the convict to clean the premises of the Emir’s Palace Mosque for one month.
Payment of ₦293,350 as medical expenses to the victim.
Twelve strokes of the cane.
The court stressed that the punishment should serve as a warning to youths who continue to engage in banned horse riding activities around the Emir’s Palace and other parts of the city.
Judicial authorities noted that illegal horse riding gatherings have increasingly led to disturbances and violence, prompting enforcement actions to maintain public order.
