The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has arrested thirteen persons suspected of drug abuse during its first operational exercise aimed at curbing the menace in the state.
The operation, which commenced at about 5:15 p.m. under the leadership of the Officer Commanding Anti-Daba Unit, CSP Bashir Gwadabe, covered the Audu Bako Secretariat, Kofar Dan’agundi, Filin Mahaha and the Kano Central Area.
According to the task force, all thirteen suspects were arrested at the Audu Bako Secretariat during the operation, which was conducted without resistance or complaints.
Those arrested were identified as Bala Rabiu, 42, also known as Shala, of Kwanar Jaba; Aminu Ibrahim, 40, also known as Babba, of Gama Quarters; Idris Isa, 32, of Iloro Road, Sabon Gari; Danladi Musa, 48, of Yakasai Quarters; and Umar Salisu, 51, also known as Bahago, of Gwale.
Others are Sulaiman Adamu, 57, also known as Yaya, of Hotoro Chula; Anas Ahmad, 35, also known as Cow Boyi, of Kwalli Quarters; Najib Muhd, 30, also known as Hiji, of Daurayi Chiranchi Quarters; Salisu Imran, 37, of Giginyu Quarters; Abubakar Inuwa, 34, of Yakasai Quarters; Nata’ala Ali, 33, also known as Baban Sokoto, of Kofar Mata; Hamisu Kabiru, 45, also known as Yakasai, of Yakasai Quarters; and Muhd Babale, 40, also known as Batte, of Zango Quarters.
The task force said Muhd Babale was found in a state of serious intoxication and was subsequently hospitalised for medical attention.
The operation signifies growing concern over the spread of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking, particularly in urban areas where the menace poses serious threats to public safety, family stability and the future of young people.
Drug abuse can impair judgment, trigger violent or reckless behaviour, contribute to criminal activities and create serious physical and mental health problems. It can also destroy livelihoods, strain families and increase pressure on hospitals, security agencies and other public institutions.
Beyond arrests, stakeholders say sustained public enlightenment, early intervention, rehabilitation, community engagement and stronger action against drug trafficking are essential to tackling the problem.
The successful commencement of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force’s operations is therefore expected to strengthen the coordinated fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, while promoting a safer and healthier environment for residents.
