The Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, Bayero University, Kano, has called for renewed reflection on the ideals of democracy, social justice and people centred governance as it marks the 76th anniversary of the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU).
The 9th edition of NEPU Day is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Sa’adu Zungur Auditorium, Mambayya House, Gwammajja, Kano.
The programme, which commemorates NEPU’s formation on August 8, 1950, is expected to examine the movement’s historical contribution to democratic development and the lessons its legacy offers contemporary Nigeria.
Dr Bala Muhammad of Bayero University is to chair the occasion, with Dr Auwalu Anwar is to serve as Speaker while Vice Chancellor Bayero University, Professor Haruna Musa is to be the chief host.
The theme, “Kwadayi Mabudin Wahala: Waiwaye akan Akidan NEPU da Darussan Zaben 2027,” is particularly significant as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections.
NEPU remains an important reference point in Northern Nigeria’s political history for its emphasis on equality, social justice, political awareness and the interests of ordinary citizens.
The anniversary therefore provides an opportunity for political actors, civil society organisations, academics and citizens to examine whether Nigeria’s democracy is adequately delivering accountability, inclusion and improved living conditions for the people.
The event is expected to stimulate discussion on how the principles associated with progressive politics can inform contemporary political participation and electoral choices.
NEPU Day thus offers an important platform for connecting historical political struggles with present day demands for accountable leadership, social justice and a stronger democratic culture ahead of 2027.
