For six decades, political discourse surrounding Northern Nigeria’s developmental challenges has fixated on a singular, nostalgia-laden premise: that since the tragic demise of the region’s founding leaders in 1966, the North lost its strategic compass. Yet, as the region continues to grapple with staggering human capital deficits, lingering insecurity, and economic stagnation, an uncomfortable truth is forcing its way to the fore. The primary bottleneck is no longer a lack of historical vision, but a flawed structural model that relies on socio-cultural talk-shops to solve complex economic problems.
For decades, platforms like the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) have served as prominent stages for political arbitration, elder statesman diplomacy, and elite consensus-building. While these gatherings excel at issuing communiqués during national political disputes, they are fundamentally unsuited for the cold, rigorous work of regional development planning. A socio-cultural forum possesses neither the statutory authority to enforce inter-state laws nor the technical machinery to design bankable infrastructure projects. Treating consultative political bodies as regional planning agencies has produced decades of symbolic gestures without measurable industrial outcomes.
It is high time for the North to look inward and rigorously address its own domestic development challenges. Having provided Africa and the broader Black world with some of its giant industrial builders, commercial pioneers, and wealthiest entrepreneurs, it is a profound paradox that the region’s home base remains trapped in economic fragility. The talent, capital, and entrepreneurial legacy clearly exist within Northern lineage; what has been missing is an institutional environment capable of channeling that capacity locally.
The path forward demands an urgent institutional paradigm shift. True regional transformation requires statutory, technocratic execution engines—insulated from political patronage and grounded in sound economics. Rather than relying on informal elite summits, state governments must establish legally binding inter-state development frameworks. Supported by independent, private-sector-funded strategy centers, such bodies would focus strictly on high-impact, cross-border projects: integrated agricultural value-chain corridors, captive gas-to-power industrial grids, and modern livestock trade logistics.
Equally critical is the commercial rescue of long-stalled legacy assets. Multi-billion-dollar investments like the Ajaokuta Steel Complex and the River Niger Dredging project cannot be revived through traditional line-ministry spending. Unbundling Ajaokuta into a multi-tenant Free Trade Zone and concessioning River Niger port facilities like Baro to private logistics operators would instantly unlock cheap structural inputs and low-cost inland freight.
Northern Nigeria does not suffer from a scarcity of talent or vision; it suffers from a deficit of functional machinery. By replacing political rhetoric with technocratic competence and binding legislative compacts, the region can finally build the internal economic engines required to power its future.
