The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced a statewide vaccination campaign aimed at protecting approximately 1.5 million cattle against Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), a highly infectious disease threatening livestock productivity and food security.
A statement by Hajiya Halima Gadanya, Director Public Enlightenment says the 2026 annual exercise was officially flagged off in Bunkure Local Government Area, with veterinary officials confirming that the campaign will extend to all 44 Local Government Areas of the state.
Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, at the event, Dr. Abubakar of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology emphasized the urgent need for collective action to eliminate the disease.
CBPP is widely known to cause severe weight loss, drastic reduction in milk production, poor meat quality, and in many cases, death of infected cattle. Experts warn that beyond the direct losses to herders and livestock farmers, the disease poses broader economic risks and could indirectly affect food supply and public health if not properly managed.
Delivering the Commissioner’s message, Dr. Abubakar noted that the establishment of the Ministry by the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf reflects a strategic commitment to strengthening animal health systems, boosting livestock productivity, and safeguarding public health in Kano State.
He called on livestock owners, pastoralists, and stakeholders to cooperate fully with veterinary teams by ensuring that their cattle are presented for vaccination. According to him, community participation remains the cornerstone of disease control and prevention.
The Ministry also highlighted the significance of the exercise as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, a period when demand for safe and wholesome meat products typically rises. Ensuring healthy livestock, officials said, will protect consumers and sustain market confidence.
The Commissioner expressed appreciation to the Governor for sustained support and for providing the enabling environment necessary for implementing livestock development initiatives across the state.
Observers note that sustained vaccination, awareness creation, and farmer cooperation will be critical to achieving long-term eradication of CBPP and securing Kano’s position as a leading livestock hub in Northern Nigeria.
