A fuel tanker carrying 33,000 litres of petrol rammed into a roadside shop, killing one person and injuring four others.
The incident occurred at Ekoro Junction, along the Abule-Egba Road in Lagos, when the tanker collided with a Toyota vehicle due to brake failure before veering into the shop located by the roadside.
Eyewitnesses said the driver appeared to have lost control of the tanker. It first struck the Toyota, and the impact pushed the vehicles into the shop where trading was ongoing.
As a result of the crash, one person died instantly, while the injured victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The identity of the deceased has not yet been disclosed, pending notification of family members.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred at about 7:30 p.m.
He explained that the MACK tanker with registration number EKY 900 XY rammed into a Toyota Corolla with registration number AAA 823 AY after experiencing brake failure.
According to him, the accident caused panic among traders and passersby in the area. Officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside other emergency responders, swiftly arrived at the scene, rescued those trapped in the shop, and conveyed them to the hospital.
Security operatives cordoned off the area to maintain order and begin investigations into the cause of the accident. The tanker driver reportedly fled the scene after the crash.
