The organised labour community within the media sector on Thursday converged on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Ikoyi, Lagos, to honour the Deputy National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr. Abimbola Abosede Oyetunde, in a solidarity-driven reception marking her redeployment to Lagos.
The event, organised by the NUJ Chapel of FRCN, celebrated Dr. Oyetunde’s elevation from Bronze FM, Benin City, to the strategic positions of Deputy Director of News and Bureau Chief, FRCN Network—an appointment widely described as a victory for professionalism, union consistency and gender inclusion in the media workforce.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the NUJ, FRCN Chapel, Comrade Wahaab Akinlade, said the reception was not merely ceremonial but a recognition of years of principled labour activism and service to the journalism profession.
He described Dr. Oyetunde’s career progression as a reflection of the rewards of dedication to ethical journalism, workers’ welfare and institutional development, noting that her emergence as the first female Deputy National President of the NUJ represents a major milestone for gender equity within the union.
“Her return to Lagos in this capacity strengthens the voice of organised labour within FRCN and the NUJ nationally. It is a collective gain for journalists who believe in strong institutions, fair labour practices and inclusive leadership,” Akinlade said.
Chairman of the NUJ Lagos State Council, Comrade Adeleye Ajayi, also described Dr. Oyetunde as a product of the union’s internal democratic process and sustained service.
Tracing her journey through the ranks of the NUJ—from Secretary of the Lagos State Council to Special Adviser to the National President, Zone F National Trustee and now Deputy National President—Ajayi said her leadership path underscores the importance of commitment and consistency in union work.
“She is one of our own, shaped by years of labour engagement and service. Her experience continues to strengthen the NUJ’s capacity to advocate for journalists’ rights and welfare,” he said.
From an institutional and workforce development perspective, Director of the National Broadcast Academy, Dr. Sam Anyawu, described Dr. Oyetunde as a trailblazer whose leadership at Bronze FM demonstrated how effective management can improve staff morale and boost organisational productivity.
He noted that her tenure at the station led to its revival and improved internally generated revenue, outcomes he attributed to inclusive leadership and disciplined labour relations.
Similarly, Director of Marketing at FRCN, Baba Istifanus, said her redeployment to Lagos was already yielding positive operational outcomes, adding that her proactive engagement with staff and departments aligns with the values of teamwork and accountability.
Director, Lagos Operations, Princess Nike Adegoke, described Dr. Oyetunde as a dependable professional whose leadership style reflects deep respect for colleagues and institutional growth.
In her citation, read by Mrs. Chinedu Okolo, Dr. Oyetunde was praised for consistently using leadership platforms to advance the cause of journalists, particularly women, and for promoting capacity building within the broadcast industry.
Head of Department, Journalism, National Broadcast Academy, Korede Ogunbunmi, described her as a leader committed to collective success, while also acknowledging the role of family support in sustaining demanding union and professional responsibilities.
The event drew a strong NUJ presence, including officials of the Lagos State Council and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), reinforcing the labour solidarity that defined the occasion.
Many speakers commended the NUJ FRCN Chapel leadership for organising what they described as a dignified and purposeful reception that reflected the values of organised labour and honoured a leader whose career continues to inspire journalists across the country.
