The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) has constituted an 11-member National Convention Planning Committee to coordinate activities leading to the organisation’s forthcoming National Convention.
In a press statement issued on Saturday at the YAN National Headquarters in Abuja, the Board said the committee was constituted in accordance with Article 4, Subsection 8 of the YAN Constitution (2024 as amended).
The Board described itself as the highest decision-making organ of the Assembly and said the committee, comprising representatives from the six geo-political zones, was established to ensure a transparent, inclusive and credible convention.
Rt. Hon. Samuel Godstime Chukwubuikem was named Chairman of the committee, while Rt. Hon. Comrade Shuaibu Sani will serve as Secretary. Other members are Rt. Hon. Famuyibo Nathaniel Oluwasegun, Prince Mohammed Sani Hassan, Amb. Muhammadu Bello Dabai, Amb. Albert Ezenwata Nwangwu, Amb. Henry Ejiroghene Oghwere, Alhaji Esinrogunjo Musbau, Amb. Sen. Adeyelu Oluwadamilare Samuel, Amb. Charles Ezeaniekwe and Rt. Hon. Habiba Umar Iliyasu.
According to the statement, the committee has been mandated to propose the theme, date, venue and overall framework for the National Convention, prepare a comprehensive budget and resource mobilisation strategy, and oversee logistics, accreditation, security, media coverage and delegates’ welfare.
It is also expected to coordinate nationwide mobilisation of state chapters and stakeholders, prepare the convention agenda and documentation, serve as the liaison between the Board, national officers, state chapters and external partners, constitute necessary sub-committees, ensure compliance with the YAN Constitution and Electoral Guidelines, and submit periodic as well as final reports to the Board.
The Board further directed the National Deputy Speaker, in consultation with the National Speaker, to immediately constitute Returning Officers for the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The Returning Officers, the statement noted, will be responsible for conducting and supervising state-level electioneering activities ahead of the National Convention in accordance with the YAN Constitution and Electoral Guidelines.
The Board urged the committee and the National Deputy Speaker to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, transparency and unity of purpose to ensure a credible convention process that reflects the aspirations of Nigerian youths.
It also appealed to members, state chapters, stakeholders and partners to give the committee and the Returning Officers the necessary support and cooperation to guarantee a successful convention.
