Supporters of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have condemned a proposed bill by some lawmakers in the United States Congress, describing it as a politically motivated attempt to weaken the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released Saturday, the Kwankwaso/Obi support group, led by Abba Sadauki Gwale, alleged that the proposal — which could impose visa restrictions on the former Kano governor — was designed to curb his growing political influence.
The group accused the American legislators of interfering in Nigeria’s domestic affairs and urged citizens to resist what it called efforts to dictate the country’s leadership from abroad.
According to the statement, Kwankwaso’s outspoken criticism of government policies on insecurity, governance and economic management may have made him a target at a time his popularity is rising nationwide.
“The timing is suspicious and appears aimed at damaging his reputation and limiting his influence,” the group said, warning that such action could set a precedent where foreign actors determine who participates in Nigeria’s politics.
The supporters further argued that the proposal lacks concrete evidence and questioned whether it was genuinely about accountability or an attempt to shape the political landscape.
They called on the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty, stressing that leadership choices should remain the decision of Nigerians alone.
Rather than singling out individuals, the group advised that global partners focus on strengthening democratic institutions and encouraging dialogue for a stable political environment
