Torrential Rains Halt Heatwaves,Bring Relief To Kano Resident

    By Abdullahi Yusuf

Torrential rains accompanied by mild winds on Friday neutralized the intense heatwaves that have for days enveloped the commercial city of Kano, bringing relief to the residents.

The rains fell heavily in virtually all parts of the ancient city and its environs in the afternoon through the night, bringing down the temperature to as low as 24 degrees Celsius.

Before the downpour, the weather read between 42 degrees and 46 degrees Celsius for several days, making life very uncomfortable for the city’s dwellers.

The weather readings further suggest that the clement temperature will last for several days, fluctuating between 24 degrees and 34 degrees Celsius.

This will enable the hitherto traumatized residents to sleep well and conduct other activities comfortably.

During the intense heat strokes, the residents even found it difficult to sleep indoors, thus resorted to passing their nights in the open; some would sleep in their house’s fronts, some in their backyards.

Some of the embattled residents even slept on the their rooftops, encountering cats and bats which crisscross the largely mud houses during the night.

A number of the residents spoken to, including Malam Nura Abubakar, expressed relief at the Friday downpour, and thanked Allah(SWT) for the blessing.

“The rains have brought immense relief to us, having suffered intense heatwaves in the last few days.At least we can now conduct our normal activities without the usual profuse sweating and also sleep well,” Abubakar,a cobler, said.

Another resident,Rabi Yusuf,a housewife, also heeved a sigh of relief at the torrential rainfall, describing it as a divine intervention that neutralized the biting heat.

“The rains have brought down the temperature to a tolerable level such that myself and the children can now sleep well, especially in the night.

“We even collected a lot of rain water in large containers, while the torrential rainfall lasted. This will temporarily alleviate our problem of water scarcity,” Yusuf added.
