As the world marks International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists today 2nd of November 2025, the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called for amendment of the cyber crime laws to provide safe working environment for Journalists to operate without fear in Nigeria .
A solidarity message signed by the National Secretary of the Union, Comrade Achike Chude decried the ongoing high levels of impunity for crimes against journalists globally.
The NUJ expresses concern over the risks Journalists face while serving as the voice of humanity, emphasizing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
“Statistics from the UNESCO observatory reveal that over 1,700 journalists were killed between 2006 and 2024, with nearly 90% of these cases remaining unsolved in the courts, hindering public awareness and constructive debate.” the revealed
Comrade Chude says attacks against journalists impede their critical role in reporting facts to the public, with impunity leading to potential dangers for nation-states by fueling authoritarianism.
