Kano Loses a Rare Lawmaker as FIDAC Calls for Road Renaming in Honour of Late Aminu Sa’ad Ungwaggo
Kano State has been thrown into mourning following the death of Honourable Aminu Sa’ad Ungwaggo, a distinguished member of the 10th Kano State House of Assembly who represented Ungwaggo Constituency.
The Fiscal Discipline and Development Advocacy Centre (FIDAC) described his passing as a profound loss to the legislature and the people of Kano State, noting that the late lawmaker was a parliamentarian of rare depth, integrity, and commitment to public service.
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Abdussalam Muhammad Kani, PhD, FCFA, FIDAC said Hon. Ungwaggo was widely admired for his principled leadership, eloquence, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of his constituents. According to the organisation, he earned respect across party lines for his punctuality, integrity, and reputation as a lawmaker whose words and promises could be trusted.
Before his election into the House of Assembly, Hon. Ungwaggo served in several public service capacities, including Interim Local Government Chairman, Chief Personnel Officer (CPO), and Director of Personnel Management (DPM). These roles, FIDAC noted, grounded him in grassroots realities and shaped his people-centred approach to governance.
As Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, the late lawmaker was credited with bringing intellectual rigour, fiscal discipline, and administrative precision to legislative oversight, while consistently advocating prudent management of public resources.
His impact extended beyond legislative debates, with notable interventions at the grassroots level. These included the renovation of Alhaji Taijjani Hashim Bridge at Kofar Ruwa; construction of Dorawar Yan Kifi Road in Rijiyar Zaki; establishment of a Senior Secondary School (Boys) in Tudun Fulani, Ungogo; and the construction of several roads across the Gayawa and Rimin Kebe axis. He also sponsored motions condemning the destruction of Rimin Zakara community by Bayero University Kano and opposing the relocation of the state-owned psychiatric hospital to Chiromawa Village.
FIDAC further noted that Hon. Ungwaggo represented the Kano State House of Assembly at high-level conferences, capacity-building programmes, and institutional exchanges both within Nigeria and internationally, thereby enhancing the Assembly’s visibility and strengthening legislative practice.
In recognition of his enduring legacy—particularly his instrumental role in the construction of Dorawar Yan Kifi Road—FIDAC has called on the Kano State Government to rename the road after the late lawmaker as a lasting tribute to his service and sacrifice.
“Kano has indeed lost a rare lawmaker whose contributions will be deeply missed,” the statement said, urging the government and people of Nigeria to celebrate the life and legacy of Hon. Aminu Sa’ad Ungwaggo.
The organisation concluded by praying for the repose of his soul and extending condolences to his family, constituents, and the people of Kano State
