A three-day Summit on Advancing Collective Action Against Drug Abuse in Kano on Monday opened at the Coronation Hall, Government House, with a strong call for unity among agencies, communities and stakeholders in tackling the growing menace of drug abuse in the State.

In her welcome address, the Coordinator, Kano Reformative Center Kiru, Cheryl Aminta Kwagga, said the theme of the Summit, “Strength in Unity,” reflects an undeniable reality that drug abuse cannot be defeated by a single sector operating in isolation.

“Real victory lies in collective action, shared strategies and sustained collaboration. That is why we are gathered here today — to forge a united front in addressing this challenge,”
    she stated.

Kwagga noted that the mandate of the Kano Reformative Center extends beyond public sensitization to include rehabilitation, reintegration, advocacy and community transformation, all of which are essential pillars in fighting substance abuse.

Chairman, Committee on Anti-Phone Snatching and Street Crimes, Retired Brigadier-General Mai’addua, in his remarks warned of the deep-rooted dangers of drug abuse, stressing that it fuels criminality and undermines social stability.

Also speaking, the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, reaffirmed the emirate’s commitment to supporting all efforts geared toward reducing drug-related incidents in the state.
He described the rate of drug abuse in Kano as “quite disturbing” and called for coordinated interventions. The Emir is scheduled to deliver a presentation on the second day of the Summit.

Special Adviser on Mobilization, Hajiya Bilkisu Indabo, highlighted the achievements of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration in addressing drug abuse through reforms, enforcement support and community-based initiatives.
Similarly, Adviser on Youth and Sports, Alhaji Sani Danja, spoke extensively on the critical role of parental guidance and early intervention in preventing young people from falling into substance abuse.

Representatives of the Nigerian Army and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also delivered goodwill messages, pledging continuous support to the state government.

The Summit continues on Tuesday with presentations from various stakeholders, experts and community groups, all working toward building a coordinated, long-term strategy to combat drug abuse in Kano.
