Kano Hisbah Board Stakeholders Reject Moves To Form Independent Hisbah Organization

    By Abdullahi Yusuf

Stakeholders of the Kano State Hisbah Board have rejected moves to establish an independent Hisbah Group in the state, saying such organization is illegal.

Led by Prof. Ibrahim Mu’azzam Mai Bushira, the stakeholders made the remark at a news conference held at the NUJ press centre,Kano,on Thursday.

“There shall be only one Hisbah in Kano State,” the stakeholders insisted, stressing that the existing Kano State Hisbah Board is legally backed by the law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly in 2003.

“Any attempt to set up a separate Hisbah entity is politically motivated and capable of causing chaos, insecurity, and confusion in the state,” Mai Bushira warned.

He said the position was taken during a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by him, where former Commanders-General, senior directors, and other top officials of the Hisbah Board deliberated extensively on recent private attempts to create an independent Hisbah organisation in the state.

The stakeholders, however, unanimously called for improved welfare, enhanced training and full government support for the Kano State Hisbah Board.

They also noted that Hisbah personnel must not be dismissed without due process and called for a more transparent recruitment system that prioritizes candidates who are “educationally qualified, morally upright and physically fit, rather than those driven by sectarian or material interests.”

The stakeholders emphasized the need for government to prioritize allowances, logistics, and other critical support to ensure that the Hisbah personnel discharge their duties effectively.

“Hisbah allowances must reflect their performance, while training programmes should be overhauled to promote best practices and enhance operational efficiency,” they said.

They also urged the Hisbah management to conduct regular self-audits to uphold discipline, noting that the conduct of each officer collectively represents the image of the organization.

The stakeholders then reaffirmed Hisbah’s pivotal role in promoting peace, moral discipline and social stability in the state, urging all political leaders, policymakers and influential citizens to support the board and keep it unified.

They also commended the state government for its efforts to enhance security in the state and urged the government to fully implement the resolutions adopted at their meeting so as to strengthen Hisbah operations.

They expressed their commitment to sustaining the legally established Hisbah Board as an essential institution for peace, security and community development in the state.
