Kano Govt To Partner UN-HABITAT To Boost State’s Socio-economic Potentials

    By Abdallahi Yusuf

Kano State Government says it is ready to collaborate with the United Nations Human Settlement Programme UN-HABITAT to boost the socio-economic potentials of the state.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Director Public Enlightenment of the State Ministry of Housing Development, Malam Adamu Abdullahi.

Abdallahi said the State Commissioner of Housing Development, Arc. Ibrahim Yakubu Adamu, stated this when he received the Project Manager, UN-Habitat Nigeria, Mr. Fernando Murillo, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

Arc. Adamu said Kano would produce new Master Plan for the state which would lay the foundation of transformation of the socio-economic lives of the people of the state which he said is in line with the objectives of the UN-Habitat.

He said Kano is the safest state in this part of the country which encouraged people to be moving to the state, thereby over- stretching the existing infrastructure.

The Commissioner noted that there would be no economic viability if the infrastructure is not in good shape.

The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,he disclosed, had therefore, planned to construct 50 housing units each in 36 rural local governments numbering 1, 800 houses and provide them with basic infrastructure such as access roads, clinic, schools, mosque, market and police station.

“You come with a good idea, and we’ll give you all the necessary support to achieve the desired objectives. His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is always willing to partner with an organisation such as yours that is bringing development to the state,” he said.

Earlier, the Project Manager UN-Habitat Nigeria, Mr. Fernando Murillo, informed the Commissioner that they were in the state to identify areas of collaboration with the state government for socio-economic development of Kano people.

Murillo stated that UN-Habitat is working in 3 states – Adamawa, Benue, and Taraba, where there are internally displaced persons camps, and that the organisation is considering building IDP housing or low cost model housing, adding, however, that Kano does not have an IDP camp.

Therefore, the Project Manager said, UN-Habitat is identifying an area of intervention to strengthen the socio-economic potentials of the people of the state.

He disclosed that UN-Habitat has special strategic plans for Kano being the most populous state, noting that in the Kano – Agadaz corridor Project, many key intervention areas have been identified in the local governments involved.
