The Kano State Government has approved the sum of Ninety-Nine Million Naira for the implementation of Phase One of its Anti-Rabies Control Programme.
A statement signed by the public Relations Officer of the Ministry of livestock Development, Hajiya Halima Gadanya says the approval was part of efforts to strengthen the livestock sector and protect public health across the state.
The programme will be coordinated by the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development under the supervision of the Honourable Commissioner, Dr. Aliyu Isah Aliyu.
In this first phase, the Ministry targets the vaccination of at least 10,000 dogs across Kano State.
Rabies is a deadly but preventable viral disease that affects both animals and humans. It is commonly transmitted through dog bites and, once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal. Authorities say mass dog vaccination remains the most effective method of preventing the disease and safeguarding lives.
As part of long-term control measures, the Ministry has also concluded plans to conduct a statewide dog census. The exercise is expected to generate reliable data to support effective planning, monitoring, and sustained rabies elimination strategies.
The Commissioner described the initiative as a critical step toward improving animal welfare and protecting residents from preventable health risks. He assured that the Ministry will work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure the programme’s success.
Residents are urged to cooperate with vaccination teams by presenting their dogs for vaccination and supporting government efforts to prevent the spread of rabies.
The Kano State Government reaffirms its commitment to policies and programmes that promote public health, enhance livestock development, and ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
