IThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a major innovation in Nigeria’s voter registration process with the introduction of an online self-service registration platform that allows eligible first-time voters to complete their registration, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting any INEC office.
The groundbreaking initiative, which takes effect from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, is expected to make voter registration more convenient, accessible and technology-driven, while reducing congestion at registration centres across the country.
Announcing the development in a press release issued on Friday, the Commission also extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, shifting the closing date from July 10 to Sunday, July 26, 2026.
According to the Commission, eligible Nigerians can access the new self-service registration platform through the dedicated CVR portal, where step by step registration guidelines are provided.
INEC explained that the new digital platform enables first-time voters to initiate and complete the registration process including biometric capture entirely online using their personal devices. The Commission said the system is equipped with robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
The electoral body described the initiative as part of its commitment to innovation, improved service delivery and expanding access to voter registration through technology.
INEC said the decision to extend the CVR exercise followed a review of the nationwide registration exercise and consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
The Commission urged all eligible Nigerians who have yet to register to take advantage of both the extended registration period and the newly introduced online self-registration platform ahead of future elections.
The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee
