Former IGP Suleiman Abba: I Joined Politics To Give Back To Society

A former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Suleiman Abba, says his decision to venture into politics is driven by a desire to serve the people and give back to society after a successful career in public service.
Alhaji Abba, who is contesting for the Dutse Senatorial District seat in Jigawa State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, made the remarks while speaking with journalists at the 80th anniversary celebration of Radio Kano on Saturday.
The former IGP expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for his career in the Nigeria Police Force, which saw him rise through the ranks to become Inspector-General of Police.
He said his entry into public life was not limited to the police, recalling his earlier experience as a part-time staff member of Radio Kano.
Alhaji Abba said he was engaged by the station on merit when he first sought employment there, without relying on personal influence or connections.
The lawyer-turned-politician also recalled some of the highlights of his policing career, including his service as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and as a MOPOL commander in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, after successfully completing his responsibilities in the police service, he believes he still has a responsibility to contribute to society through another avenue of public service.
He described his political venture as an opportunity to reciprocate the benefits and opportunities he received from society throughout his career.
The former IGP also reflected on the 2015 general elections, recalling his responsibility in leading the security architecture during a period he described as politically tense.
He said the situation required firm coordination and effective management of security to maintain stability during the electoral process.
Alhaji Abba’s transition from broadcasting to policing and now partisan politics marks another chapter in a career spanning media, law enforcement and public service.
