Dr Abdullahi Getso Challenges Virtuous Nigerians to Rescue Politics from Self-Serving Leaders

Renowned Islamic scholar, Dr Abdullahi Muhammad Getso, has called on Nigerians with integrity and moral uprightness to actively participate in politics as a way of reversing the country’s persistent challenge of poor leadership.
Dr Getso made the call while delivering his Friday sermon at Jamiur Rahman Jumaat Mosque in Kundila, where he lamented the growing trend of virtuous and competent individuals shying away from electoral contests, thereby leaving the political space in the hands of self-centred actors.
According to the cleric, societal transformation can only be achieved when people of proven character step forward to seek leadership positions, with the backing and mobilisation of the electorate.
“It is the collective responsibility of the people to identify credible individuals and encourage them to contest elections so that society can benefit from their righteousness and sense of justice,” he said.
Dr Getso decried the conduct of some politicians who, driven by personal interests, unlawfully squander public resources after assuming office, leaving the masses to bear the consequences of misgovernance.
He outlined key qualities of good leadership, including fairness, justice, protection of public funds, rejection of corruption, and the willingness to seek professional advice in order to advance societal development.
The Islamic scholar stressed that leadership should be viewed as a sacred trust and responsibility, not as an avenue for amassing ill-gotten wealth.
Emphasising civic responsibility, Dr Getso urged Nigerians to fully participate in the voting process, noting that meaningful change begins at the ballot box through the deliberate choice of competent and principled leaders.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s vast but underutilised economic opportunities, attributing stagnation to poor leadership choices rather than lack of resources.
The sermon concluded with prayers for a peaceful, prosperous, and progressive Nigeria, free from stagnation and injustice. Dr Getso also reminded worshippers of the spiritual rewards and blessings associated with the forthcoming holy month of Ramadan, encouraging increased devotion and moral reflection.
