Attacking Journalists Is Attacking Democracy

The recent attack on journalists returning from an APC related rally in Kano should be treated as more than an isolated incident. Coming after the attack on journalists during the #EndBadGovernance protest on August 1, 2024, it raises serious concerns about the safety of media practitioners as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 elections.
In August 2024, hoodlums attacked a Channels Television vehicle carrying 11 Journalists from various media houses, covering the protest, smashing its windows and injuring occupants. A TVC News correspondent Ibrahim Isah was also physically assaulted, while another vehicle carrying journalists from other media organisations came under attack.
On September 5, 2026, journalists returning from a political rally in Kano were again attacked. A Radio Nigeria/Pyramid FM vehicle was reportedly struck with machetes and knives, damaging its windows and injuring the driver.
These incidents send a disturbing message, journalists covering political activities may increasingly become targets of violence.
An attack on a journalist is not simply an attack on a media worker. It is an attack on the public’s right to know and, ultimately, on democracy. If journalists are intimidated from covering rallies, protests, campaigns and elections, citizens may be left with rumours, propaganda and unverified information.
UNESCO recognises the safety of journalists as fundamental to freedom of expression and democracy. Media organisations must therefore strengthen safety training, risk assessment, emergency procedures and protective measures for journalists covering volatile events. Journalists themselves must also observe professional safety standards and avoid unnecessary exposure to danger.
The Kano State Government and security agencies must confront political thuggery head on. Condemnations after attacks are not enough. There should be intelligence led prevention, effective security at political gatherings, prosecution of perpetrators and firm measures against the carrying of dangerous weapons.
Kano has demonstrated that peaceful, weapon free political gatherings are possible. During Vice President Kashim Shettima’s visit to the state to formally receive Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, no dangerous weapons were reportedly sighted. This demonstrates that adequate planning and security can make political events safer.
As 2027 approaches, political parties, government, security agencies, media organisations and civil society must work together to protect journalists.
The warning signs are already here. The safety of journalists must become part of the preparation for the 2027 elections, not an afterthought when another journalist is attacked.
