The broadcast industry has lost a rare gem. With a heavy heart, I bid farewell to Hajiya Lami Hafsat Maccido, an icon whose voice, and professionalism shaped many of us.
Long before I found myself in broadcasting over 35 years ago, Anti Lami was already a household name at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Kano. Her eloquence, calm composure, and effortless delivery spoke volumes. She did not merely read the news; she gave it life with dignity and poise. Truly, she was an ace broadcaster of repute.
I had the privilege of drawing closer to her during her time at Kano State Radio Corporation (Radio Kano FM). Though I worked in the newsroom as a reporter and only occasionally presented the news, she always paid attention. Whenever she noticed a flaw, she corrected it with uncommon humility and kindness. Her gentle words still echo in my heart:
“I think Abbas, if this is done this way, it will be better. What do you think?”
Despite being a senior colleague, she never carried herself with superiority. Instead, she uplifted, guided, and silently mentored many of us in the rudiments of news casting and script writing. Her patience was remarkable. Her resilience inspiring. Her ability to adapt and adjust to any situation was admirable. And above all, she wore a constant, reassuring smile.
My last encounter with her remains unforgettable. It was during a meeting of the Kano Veterans Forum at Tahir Guest Palace. After I greeted her, she smiled and said,
“Chairman, my NUJ ID has expired, kindly facilitate the renewal. I learnt you’ve also retired, welcome to the club.”
Even in retirement, her composure remained intact.
At 72, she still maintained her professional tempo. Then came Wednesday the 18th, a day of mixed emotions. The first day of Ramadan, and the passing of a mentor. The crowd at her funeral was overwhelming. Associates and admirers, struggled to hold back tears as her body was lowered to its final resting place. It was a testament to a life well lived and a legacy deeply cherished.
Indeed, the broadcast space is poorer without her presence.
May Almighty Allah forgive her shortcomings, widen her grave, and grant her Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen thumma Ameen.
Farewell, Anti Lami Hafsat Maccido. Your voice may be silent, but your impact will continue to echo through the airwaves and in our hearts forever.
