Our Government’s Stance Against Corruption Is Uncompromising – Kano Information Commissioner

    By Abdullahi Yusuf

Kano State Government has reiterated its commitment to the fight against corruption, saying its zero-tolerance for corruption cannot be compromised.

The State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Wayya, stated this at the opening of a two-day 1st Kano Civil Society Organizations Conference 2025.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration is uncompromising in its zero-tolerance stance on corruption. It has institutionalized reforms that align with global best practices, Guided by the amended Public Procurement Law of 2021.It has entrenched systems that ensure value for money, quality delivery and citizens’ trust,”Wayya said.

He listed some of the reforms to include strict enforcement of procurement law through transparent bidding and issuance of “No Objection” certificates, periodic procurement audits to guarantee compliance and stop-malpractice and Annual Procurement and Disposal Plan (APDP) to align spending with real priorities.

Others,he said, are digitization of processes through the Kano State Integrated Monitoring System (KSIMS) and e-procurement platforms to track projects in real-time,monthly project monitoring across all the Local Government Areas of the state, with reports sent directly to the Governor for corrective action and and capacity-building workshops for Ministries, Departments and Agencies to instill discipline and compliance.

The rest, the commissioner said, included Community and CSOs engagement, ensuring citizens are co-owners of projects and watchdogs over execution, open communication, where all State Executive Council’s approvals are made public immediately for citizens to follow and prudent financial management where all financial releases now pass through the Accountant General’s office independently, without interference or kickbacks.

“Our Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) now operates freely. without political pressure, ensuring fiscal discipline and strict accountability. This is a clear departure from the past.

“These steps are not cosmetic, they are structural safeguards against corruption. They reflect our determination to replace secrecy with openness, waste with prudence and suspicion with trust,”he added.

Declaring the conference open, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, commended the resilience of civil society organizations in areas of education, health care, gender justice, climate action, anti-corruption advocacy and conflict resolutions.

“Your role is indispensable, especially at a time when democratic governance is being tested by socio-political and economic challenges. At this juncture, I must commend the organizers who bring together such a broad and representative area of stakeholders.

“This platform offers us the opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen partnership, and co-create solutions. Permit me, therefore, to reaffirm that the present administration of Kano, under the able leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, places transparency, accountability, and inclusivity at the heart of governance through initiatives such as the State Safe Corridor Program for Youth Rehabilitation and Empowerment, the revival of the State Data Center, and reforms in procurement and monitoring,”Yusuf said.

The conference was organized by the Kano Patriotic Civil Society Organizations with the support from the State Government through the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs.
