Cigarette Sellers Pledge Cooperation With Kano State Consumers Protection Council

    By Abdullshi Yusuf

The Kano State Cigarette Sellers Association has pledged to work closely with the Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KCPC) to ensure compliance with laws and regulations governing the sale of cigarettes to members of the public.

This is contained in a statement signed by Jamilu Mustapha Yakasai,Director, Public Enlightenment of the Council.

Speaking during a meeting with the Council, the State Chairman of the Association, Alhaji Ayuba Goza, said all relevant guidelines and regulations concerning the sale of cigarettes were clearly stated on cigarette packs.

He, however, explained that the association sometimes faces challenges caused by delays in the transportation and delivery of cigarettes from their suppliers, which could occasionally lead to certain problems.

Alhaji Ayuba Goza pledged to work with members of the association to ensure continued compliance with all relevant laws and regulations governing the sale of cigarettes.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Consumer Protection Council, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, stated that the law prohibits the sale of cigarettes to persons under the age of 18.

Muhammad also stressed the importance of educating the public about the health risks associated with cigarette smoking, as well as ensuring compliance with requirements concerning information displayed on cigarette packs, including expiry dates.

He thanked the leadership of the association for accepting the Council’s invitation and assured them that KCPC would continue to monitor the sale of cigarettes across Kano State to ensure compliance with the law and safeguard the health and well-being of the people of the state.
