The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT) has expressed deep concern over the continuous rise in fuel prices across Nigeria, warning that the situation is worsening economic hardship for millions of citizens.
In a statement issued by the organization’s Country Director, Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the group said the persistent increase in petrol prices has triggered a chain reaction affecting transportation, food prices, and the overall cost of living in the country.
According to the organization, many Nigerians find the situation difficult to understand, considering that Nigeria is a major oil-producing nation with substantial petroleum resources and refining capacity.
The commission noted that while international oil prices may fluctuate, citizens expect the country’s natural resources to translate into economic relief and improved living conditions for the population.
IHRC-RFT warned that instead of providing relief, rising fuel prices are placing additional pressure on households already facing economic challenges.
The organization therefore called on the leadership of the country to respond with urgency, transparency, and a strong commitment to the welfare of citizens.
It also urged relevant stakeholders, particularly members of the National Assembly of Nigeria, to carefully review the situation and take necessary measures to address the growing concern.
