The Colleges of Education Old Students Association of Nigeria (COEOSAN) has called on the Federal Government to appoint an Executive Secretary for the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) who possesses a verifiable College of Education background and extensive experience within the system.
The appeal was made by the President General of COEOSAN, Dr. Shehu Salisu Rogo (Dallatun Rogo), during a press conference held in Kano.
Dr. Rogo stressed that Colleges of Education remain the backbone of teacher preparation in Nigeria, noting that leadership at the regulatory level must reflect a deep understanding of the structure, challenges, and operational realities of the institutions.
According to him, appointing an individual with direct experience in the College of Education system would enhance policy implementation, strengthen institutional standards, and reposition the sector for greater efficiency and global competitiveness.
He explained that professionals who have either studied or worked extensively within Colleges of Education possess first-hand knowledge of curriculum development, teacher training dynamics, accreditation processes, and institutional administration — qualities he described as essential for effective leadership of the NCCE.
Dr. Rogo urged the Federal Government to prioritize competence, experience, and deep sectoral understanding in making the appointment.
He also commended the Honourable Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, for ongoing reforms and initiatives in the education sector. According to him, the Minister’s actions reflect a clear vision aimed at addressing longstanding challenges while laying a solid foundation for future growth and global competitiveness.
COEOSAN applauded the Minister’s dedication and proactive leadership, reaffirming its support for policies and programmes designed to strengthen Colleges of Education and enhance the training of professional teachers across the country.
The Association emphasized that its recommendation is in the best interest of Nigeria’s education sector and aligns with broader efforts to reform and improve teacher education nationwide.
Dr. Rogo reiterated COEOSAN’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote quality teacher education and contribute to national developm
