The Kano State Police Command has announced plans to hold a one-day sensitization workshop aimed at combating hate speech and fake news across the state.
The initiative, being organized under the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), is in partnership with the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) and the Aminu Magashi Garba Foundation (AMGF).
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the workshop is in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on sustained community-based engagement.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Aminu Dantata Auditorium, Khalifa Isyaka Rabiu University of Nigeria (KHAIRUN), Gadon Kaya, Kano.
The workshop is expected to bring together key media stakeholders, including political actors, journalists, social media influencers, online media editors, and police officers, with the aim of addressing the growing menace of hate speech and the spread of fake news.
The police said the programme became necessary following a recent increase in inflammatory speeches, incitements, and misleading statements capable of disrupting peace and public order in the state, particularly through traditional and digital media platforms.
Experts drawn from the media industry, the legal profession, and the Nigeria Police Force will serve as resource persons during the workshop.
The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, urged all invited stakeholders to actively participate and contribute meaningfully to discussions geared towards promoting peace, unity, and stability in the state.
He also appealed to members of the public to refrain from spreading hate speech and fake news, and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
The Kano State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with community groups and civil society organizations in ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for all residents.
