    Healthcare:Kano Govt Constructs 324 PHCs,16 Hospitals In 2 Years – Commissioner
    By Abdullahi Yusuf
Kano State Government says it has constructed 324 functional Primary Healthcare Centres(PHCs) in the last two years, out of the proposed 483 PHCs in the State Local Government Wards.
This, the government said, was part of its efforts to strengthen quick delivery of healthcare programmes across the state.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, who disclosed this in Kano on Thursday, said the government would continue to provide adequate healthcare to the people of the state.
“When this Government came on May 2023, we met on ground non functional health systems, with virtually everything collapsed, and with almost all the state hospitals facing one problem or the other.
“We took the challenges headlong with first rehabilitating major hospitals of Nassarwa, Murtala Mohammed, Hasiyya Bayero and 16 other hospitals across the 16 Local Government Areas, with most of them completed.
“In Hasiyya Bayero we upgraded the hospital and ensured that even drugs are given free to children, while at Murtala Mohammed hospital we doubled the support to women in child delivery, which was previously only N30 million, but now we increased it to N60 million,” Dr. Labaran said.
He also disclosed that the State Drugs Revolving Scheme was being run with N1.4 billion when Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso left Government, but that the succeeding Ganduje administration left the scheme with heavy debts and with no drugs.
“We have now revived the Drugs Revolving Scheme, with enough drugs and functioning without any debts because we have cleared all of them,” he said.
The commissioner also disclosed that the sum of N40 billion was proposed for the health sector in the state’ 2026 budget, explaining that the allocation was designed to consolidate the ongoing reforms and strengthen healthcare delivery across the 44 local government areas of the state.
He said the government had commenced the recruitment of over 2,600 new health workers to address manpower gaps in hospitals and primary healthcare centres in the state.
He said the recruitment would cover Medical Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Environmental Health Officers, Laboratory Scientists, and other critical cadres needed to enhance service delivery.
Labaran said in the 2026 budget priority had been given to the renovation of health facilities and provision of state-of-the-art medical equipment to upgrade service capacity, reduce patient waiting time, and improve emergency response.
“We are committed to rebuilding our hospitals and equipping them with modern technology that will ensure quality and efficient healthcare services to the people of the state,” the commissioner said.
He commended Governo to Abba Kabir Yusuf for his sustained investment and unwavering attention to the health needs of the people.
According to him,the governor’s support had enabled the ministry to pursue key reforms aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes, addressing disease outbreaks and supporting community-level health programmes.
