The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Abdullahi Yahya, has disclosed that the Union is making arrangements to produce a comprehensive compendium of working journalists across the country.

Comrade Yahya said the initiative aims to document the profiles of all registered journalists in Nigeria, a move he described as crucial in curbing the activities of fake journalists and improving professionalism in the media industry.

Speaking during a live programme on Freedom Radio, Jigawa, the NUJ President noted that the compendium will serve as a reference tool to authenticate genuine practitioners and strengthen the Union’s regulatory framework.

According to him, the NUJ is also taking steps to handle cases of misconduct among its members more effectively, as part of broader efforts to uphold ethical standards in journalism.

He further revealed that the Union has constituted a committee to draft a Media Enhancement Bill, which will soon be presented to the National Assembly. The bill, he said, seeks to improve the welfare and working conditions of journalists across the country to enhance their performance.

Commenting on the proliferation of broadcast media outlets, Comrade Yahya expressed concern that some stations fail to meet the minimum operational requirements as outlined in international standards.

He added that the Union had advised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to invoke relevant provisions of the law to address the excesses of such stations and ensure compliance with broadcast regulations.

Comrade Yahya reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to promoting professionalism, protecting the welfare of its members, and restoring public confidence in journalism practice in Nigeria.

He Commended Jigawa NUJ Council led by Comrade Ismail Ibrahim for making moves to restore the lost glory of the Union
