Thuggery:Kano Police Command Profiles 718 Repentant Youths

    By Abdullahi Yusuf

Kano State Police Command says it has so far profiled 718 youths whom have renounced thuggery and repented from the act.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (SID) in the command,Abdulkarim Abdullahi, disclosed the figure at the ‘Safe Corridor’ programme organised for the repentant thugs held at the Bompai Police Headquarters, Kano on Wednesday evening.

Abdulkarim also revealed that an additional 597 others had willingly submitted themselves to the command, having agreed to lay down their arms and renounce violence in all its ramifications.

“This courageous decision by the concerned youths is not only commendable but also strengthens our collective belief that with the right environment and sincere engagement, positive transformation is absolutely achievable.

“This milestone underscores the effectiveness of our approach and clearly demonstrates that sustained engagement, community-oriented policing, and inclusive governance remain the most viable instruments for building a lasting peace,”he said.

The ACP urged the Kano State Government and other relevant stakeholders to invest more in youth empowerment programmes and other long-term socio-economic interventions to consolidate the gains so far recorded.

“For too long, the scourge of youth thuggery has cast a devastating shadow over our communities — eroding peace, dampening economic activities, and projecting a negative image of our dear state.

“Kano, as the commercial nerve-centre of Northern Nigeria, has regrettably borne the brunt of this menace, with several valuable lives and properties destroyed in the wake of violent confrontations perpetrated by misguided elements who were once lured into criminality,” he said.

In his address, the State Commissioner of Police, Dr Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, called on community leaders, religious leaders and other stakeholders to intensify efforts at sensitizing the youths on the dangers of violence, crime and other anti-social behaviours.

“Every individual, every family, and every community has a role to play in ensuring peace and stability in our Society.

“The Kano State Government, through this ‘Safe Corridor programme, is offering you a second chance to start afresh and become productive members of the society. Take this opportunity seriously. Let today mark the beginning of a new chapter in your lives,” Bakori said.

The state Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Amb.Ibrahim Waiya, said the initiative is clear indication that the State government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is committed to promoting peace, safer and more harmonious Kano State.

Wayya said the government is ready to support the repentant thugs with various empowerment programmes to enable them to become self-reliant and contribute to the economic growth and development of the state.
