Uromi 16:Rep Rurum Advises Northern Hunters Against Venturing To South

    By Abdullahi Yusuf

A member of the House of Representatives representing Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya in Kano State,Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has advised hunters in the North to desist from venturing into the Southern parts of country in the course of their activities.

Rurum said the advice became necessary in view of the security concerns such hunting activities are causing, citing the recent killing of 16 hunters from Kano State at Uromi, Edo State.

He gave the advice at Torankawa in Bunkure Local Government Area rea of Kano State on Thursday where he condoled with the families of the 16 hunters killed at Uromi.

Rurum said certain factors including language barriers and cultural differences between the northern hunters and their host communities in the south could also spark suspicion and tension that result into violence leading to loss of lives.

“Local weapons such as dane guns, swords and knives carried by the northern hunters also create some apprehension in their host southern communities which could result into altercations between the two parties.

“Carrying dangerous weapons and moving around with them from one end to another in this sensitive period of insecurity in the land will surely send a bad signal and result into chaos. Therefore, our hunters should henceforth stop it.

“Just recently over 30 of my Rano hometown hunters were apprehended in Ondo State. I had to personally go and see the Governor and show every evidence that they are not criminals before he worked out for their release.

“If those people in Ondo State who arrested our Rano hunters were senseless like those Uromi killers, what do you think would have happened. The story would have been different by now,” the lawmaker said.

He donated N5 million to the families of the deceased hunters and promised to immediately commence the building of Islamiyya Primary and Secondary School in the area for the orphans of the slain hunters.

In his remarks, the State Chairman of a faction of the NNPP in the state, Sen. Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa, said he was touched by the Uromi killings but added the incident should serve as a lesson that would help guard against future reoccurrence.
