A prominent supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chairman of Da Hannuna, a group under Arewa For Asiwaju, Alhaji Jamilu Jadda Garko, has fired back at former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye over his reported challenge to the President to participate in a Quranic recitation competition.

In a statement on Tuesday, Garko criticised Melaye’s remarks following President Tinubu’s recent Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, questioning the former senator’s moral and religious standing to challenge the President on matters concerning the Holy Quran.

Melaye had reportedly challenged Tinubu to a Quranic recitation contest following the President’s spiritual visit to Saudi Arabia, sparking heated reactions and debates across social media platforms.

Reacting to the development, Garko urged the former senator to exercise restraint and refrain from making comments he considered disrespectful to the President’s religious identity and knowledge of the Holy Quran.

According to Garko, Melaye should reflect on his own religious background before questioning another person’s religious credentials.

He further challenged the former senator to embrace Islam if he genuinely wished to understand and appreciate the teachings of the Holy Quran.

“You are not a pure man because of your religious background. If you want to know our Holy Book, convert to Islam. I am advising you to desist from making such unnecessary statements,” Garko was quoted as saying.

He maintained that matters relating to religion and the Holy Quran should be approached with respect, caution and a sense of responsibility rather than being turned into instruments of political arguments and public controversy.

Garko’s reaction underscores the growing disagreement over Melaye’s comments, with the Tinubu supporter insisting that discussions involving the Holy Quran and Islamic faith must be handled with the seriousness and respect they deserve.
