The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union(COEASU), Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, has condemned the formation of Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) by some of its members in the institution, describing it as illegal.

COEASU, in a press conference held in Kano on Tuesday, therefore, distanced itself from the activities of members of the union who formed the group.

“We strongly reject the emergence of this illegal union formed by some of our members and its activities. It is illegal because we are not yet ripe to become members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU),” said the Chairman of the union,Ado Mohammed Abdullahi.

Abdullahi said following the upgrading of the institution from Federal College of Education,Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, members of the union began a transition process to enable them become members of ASUU.

He said the union is working hard to satisfy the laid down requirements for its members to become part of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU).

He said the congress of the union had held a meeting during which it condemned the emergence of the group and its activities including a petition it sent to the Minister of Education.

He said in the petition which was disseminated in the media, the group asked the Minister to remove the Chairman of the Governing Council of the university and the acting Vice Chancellor, citing reasons.

“We hereby distance ourselves from the petition sent to the Minister of Education by the illegal group, asking the minister to remove our council chairman and the acting Vice Chancellor. We are not part of it,” the chairman said.

According to him, the congress had conveyed the activities of the illegal group to the university’s Standing Disciplinary Committee to investigate them and take appropriate action.
