Group Urges Gov Yusuf To Appoint Lawan Badamasi As KANSIEC Chairman

By Abdullahi Yusuf

The Kano State Youth for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria has urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to consider appointing Alhaji Lawan Badamasi as the substantive Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

The group, under the leadership of its Chairman, Ibrahim Ismail, made the appeal following the resignation of Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, who has been appointed as the Kano State Commissioner for Higher Education.

In a statement, Ibrahim Ismail said Lawan Badamasi, who currently serves as KANSIEC Commissioner for Media and Publicity, should be considered to lead the electoral body in view of the leadership vacancy created by Malumfashi’s departure.

According to the group, Badamasi’s experience within the commission and familiarity with its operations could provide an opportunity for administrative continuity and a smooth transition in the leadership of the electoral institution.

The organisation noted that leadership continuity remains important in ensuring that the commission sustains its statutory responsibilities, particularly in organising, conducting and supervising local government elections across the 44 local government areas of Kano State.

It further observed that the office of the KANSIEC chairman requires a commitment to transparency, impartiality, accountability and the protection of the integrity of the electoral process.

The group maintained that appointing someone familiar with the commission’s internal operations could help minimise administrative disruptions and sustain ongoing institutional activities.

It also called on Governor Yusuf to ensure that the process of appointing a new KANSIEC chairman complies with the relevant constitutional and statutory provisions guiding the establishment and operations of the state electoral commission.

The organisation emphasised that the independence of the commission must remain a priority, stressing that public confidence in democratic institutions depends largely on their ability to discharge their responsibilities without undue interference.

Kano State Youth for Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria, under the leadership of Ibrahim Ismail, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic values, youth participation, accountability, good governance and credible electoral processes in Kano State.

The group urged the state government to give its recommendation due consideration in the interest of institutional stability and the continued development of democracy at the grassroots.
