Durbar:Kano Residents Apprehensive About IGP’s Invitation To Emir Sanusi

Many residents of Kano city have expressed fears about the invitation of the Nigeria Police Force to the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, in connection with an incident that occurred during the recent Sallah celebrations in the city.

The Force Headquarters had invited the Emir to an investigative meeting in connection with an incident during which
one Usman Sagiru 20, was arrested by the Kano State Police Command.

Sagiru was arrested in connection with the alleged killing and attack on members of a vigilance group that occurred in the entourage of the Emir after Eid prayers.

Some of the residents spoken to on condition of anonymity, said they feared that the invitation to the Emir as contained in
a letter dated April 4, 2025, and signed by CP Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, Commissioner of Police (Operations) on the directive of the Inspector General of Police, might be a step towards a declaration of State of Emergency in the state.

“We are apprehensive that the invitation of the Force headquarters might create a situation where a State of Emergency could be contemplated,and would not augur well for Kano and other states in the North.

“The IGP’s letter which requested the Emir to report to the Force Intelligence Department headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, by 10 a.m, could also be an initial step towards his removal from his throne,” the inhabitants alleged.

According to them,what happened on Sallah Day was not a Durbar but a normal movement of the Emir from the Eid ground on horse back to his Palace.

They advised the Inspector General of Police to handle the matter fairly so that the residents of the ancient city would continue to enjoy peace and tranquility.

However the Kano Residents viewed the Invitation as another forceful means of removing the Emir and creating serious crises in the State which might lead to the slamming of State of Emergency.

“We cautioned this new strategic moves to set Kano Ablaze and thereby creating an avenue for the State of Emergency in the State, we strongly reject that moves”, the Citizens who spoke in anonymous said.
