The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic death of seven journalists from Gombe State who lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident.
The shocking incident, which occurred while the journalists were on official duty, has sent waves of grief across the media landscape in Gombe State and the nation at large. Colleagues, media organisations, and stakeholders have described the loss as one of the darkest moments in the history of journalism in the state.
In a press statement signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya, the NUJ expressed profound shock and sorrow over the untimely demise of the journalists, describing them as dedicated professionals who served society with courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to truth.
“Their deaths are a devastating blow to the journalism profession, not only in Gombe State but across Nigeria. They were passionate storytellers and public servants whose contributions to national development will not be forgotten,” the statement read.
On behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC) and the entire NUJ family nationwide, the Union extended heartfelt condolences to the NUJ Gombe State Council, as well as the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased journalists.
The NUJ noted that the loss has created an irreplaceable void within the media community and expressed solidarity with the Gombe State media family in their moment of grief. The Union also offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed and for God to grant their loved ones the strength to endure the painful loss.
Beyond mourning, the NUJ used the tragic incident to renew its call for improved road safety measures and responsible driving, stressing that journalists are often exposed to significant risks as they travel frequently in the line of duty.
The Union emphasized that the memories and legacies of the fallen journalists would continue to inspire the profession, urging media practitioners to honor them by upholding the values of truth, professionalism, and service to humanity.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, the NUJ concluded by praying that the souls of the departed journalists rest in perfect peace.
