The Kano State Police Command on Monday launched the operational office of its newly-established
Violent Crimes Response Unit(VCRU) aimed at tackling violent crimes across the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, while launching the Unit described the event as a significant milestone in the command’s commitment to safer and more secure communities in the state.
“Today, we officially launch the operational office of the Violent Crime Response Unit, established on 24th April 2026, in accordance with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rulwan Disu.
“This launch represents the operationalization of our resolve to combat violent crimes with speed, precision, and professionalism.
“The VCRU is a specialized intelligent driving tactical unit created to decisively address cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, hijacking, and other violent crimes that threaten public safety and economic activities in Kano State.
“With the launch of this office, the Kano State Police Command is now in a better position to respond faster to the distress call to violent crime incidents across the state, prevent, manage, and control violent crimes through proactive deployments and intelligence-led operations.
“Investigate and prosecute offenders effectively, ensuring that justice is overtly served without delay. Our goal is simple. Reduce response time, dominate the public space, and deny criminals the freedom to operate in the state.
“The VCRU is not a unit for every police officer. We have carefully selected and deployed trained, professional, committed, dedicated, and result-oriented police officers to form this unit. Each officer has undergone rigorous screening and mandatory training in tactical response, human rights, professional conduct, and intelligence handling in line with global best practices.
“Displaying integrity and respect for human rights will remain the guiding principle of this VCRU operation. I take personal responsibility for the conduct, performance, and public image of this unit. This launch aligns fully with the sweeping reforms and directives of the National Police on intelligence-led policing and community partnership,”Bakori said.
According to the Commissioner, the VCRU will operate on real-time intelligence, data analysis, and credible information from the public.
“We will sustain aggressive community engagement to build trust, gather information, and ensure that policing and criminal is shared responsibility.
“To strengthen public confidence, we have established the VCRU State Civilian Oversight Board comprising civil society leaders, traditional rulers, legal practitioners, and community representatives,” he said.
He stated that a dedicated public complaint desk has also been set up at the BCRU base, and that all complaints will be acknowledged and responded to within time.
“In location and contact channels, the VCRU headquarters is carefully and strategically chosen for ease of accessibility and coordination within the central state of Kano Metropolis at number two, Bank Road adjacent to Metro Area Command Kanu,” Bakori added.
